With only three weeks left in the campaign, there are few, but a small number of independents who know who they are going to vote for. The pundits and the polls all favor Barack Obama, heading into the homestretch, but the race may be much closer than that. Both candidates, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama are both honorable men. As a former Republican and Goldwater Conservative, I supported John McCain in the 2000 Election and ended up voting for Vice President Al Gore. I saw the Republican Party being hijacked by the Religious Right, who did not support the principles of the Republican Party, which I had supported for most of my life. It was then when I realized that I had been sleepwalking for the past decade and saw that America’s future was at stake. I came to what was then a horrible realization…..I was a Democrat. The only solace I could find was a statement by the late Barry Goldwater in 1994, ” which reflected how I felt. "When you say "radical right" today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.”
The John McCain that we see today has morphed from the “maverick.” who I supported after succeeding to Barry Goldwater’s seat in the Senate to a rubber stamp of the George W. Bush Administration. You can go on his website and look at his position on the issues that continue those of the worst President in American History, with a legacy of an ongoing war in Iraq, a loosing war in Afghanistan and now the meltdown of The American Economy. McCain’s message for change is nothing more than a scaled down version of the Bush Administration. It’s strange how History repeats itself! We’re in a very similar situation to the 1928 Election, but this time the Economy tanked before the election. In 1928, it wouldn’t happen until a year later and Herbert Hoover still had three more years of doing nothing, believing that the Economy would correct itself. In the 2008 Presidential Election, we have a chance to help the Economy stabilize, even though we will be in a Recession for several years. I believe that the Administration reluctantly stepped up to the plate and has begun to make the correct decisions, but we need to do more. John McCain and the Republican Platform will not correctly address this economic crisis. Our best chance for success is with Barack Obama and the Democratic Platform!
As with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, Obama finds himself in a similar situation. In Obama’s case, however, not all the damage has been done. He still has something to work with. Obama quickly announced his plan to deal with the Economic Crisis. His Plan begins with jobs, a $3,000.00 tax credit for each full time job created in the U.S., allowing families to withdraw 15%, or up to $10.000.00 of their retirement savings without facing a tax penalty. He also has suggested a 90 day moratorium on foreclosures for those Americans who have acted in good faith and could refinance their homes. He further suggested a “Funding backstop” for state and local governments to keep payrolls and projects and eliminate income tax on unemployment benefits as well as having the Treasury loosen its belt to help on loans, mortgages as well as credit card balances. This is addition to his overall Economic Plan before this crisis hit. You can click here to read the complete Economic Plan for Barack Obama. Remember: vote your wallet…..if you make less that $250,000.00 a year, you should vote for Obama. If you make over that amount, you’re probably better off voting for McCain. For those who do, you may not be earning over $250,000.00 much longer!
However, there is more than the Economic Crisis, although it overshadows everything else at the moment, and will continue to do so. We only have one shot at correcting this Economy, for if we fail, not only the United States but the entire World will go into a prolonged Depression. The Obama-Biden ticket is directed to the middle and lower classes. Historically, the Democrats have taken this position, but have had a difficult time getting their message across. There is no mistake in this election. Looking at other topics which haven’t been in the news lately, Obama will do what is possible to end the War in Iraq. Unfortunately, the War has a life of its own and it will dictate how and when we can get out, but Obama is willing to do what the Bush Administration and John McCain have refused to do: enter Diplomacy into the mix. Remember Diplomacy?.....it’s a word no longer used in Washington, but it was the keystone for the Cold War and both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush heavily relied on it. Our world image is broken and we cannot lead if we’re considered a “loose cannon!” Health Care is a problem that is also swept up in the Economic Crisis. Obama’s Plan addresses the most and best coverage for all Americans. In some way, it is similar to the German Health Care Plan, which includes public and private coverage and includes all of its citizens. In many ways, the German Plan is considered one of the best in the world. There is another issue which very few of the pundits have discussed and that is image. We have entered into a new Century, which will be far different than the one we left behind. Barack Obama best represents this new Century. John McCain, unfortunately, represents the past. That’s it in a nutshell…….I could continue on each issue, but you don’t have the time and inclination to read it. We will make the most important decision on November 4th! Let’s make the right one!
