Really Pissed Off!

We’ll probably never know whether it was arrogance or a pattern of self-destruction that brought down former Governor Eliot Spitzer. The “sheriff of Wall Street” has been gunned down at the OK Corral. He should have gone to the Moonlight Bunny Ranch near Carson City, NV. Had he done so, Spitzer would still be Governor of New York! There are two morals to this story. The first is “Don’t crap where you eat,” and the second is “In America, keep Sex in the closet!” It may not make much sense to the rest of the world, but a BJ brought us; direct from the Religious Right and our Puritanical Past, The Bush Administration! This country was colonized upon Puritan beliefs and they continue in today’s society. For most of the Western World, we are a conundrum of a society that displays sex and violence, but shrinks from it when it hits home. If you live by the sword, you die by the sword!

Spitzer is gone. There is no point going over what he did, how many times he did it and how much money he spent. We’ve all read or heard more that we want to know, at least some of us have. I truly feel sorry for his wife and family, as they are the innocent victims in this case. As for Spitzer, he certainly should have known better! If Eliot Spitzer is prosecuted for the Mann Act, it will get laughed out of Court! No one person has been prosecuted on that one for the past 50 years! In recent times, it’s become the butt of a punch line! The Mann Act was designed to prosecute those who would transport Prostitution in a large scale across state lines. As for Money Laundering, it was his money! He can do whatever the hell he wants to do with it as long as it doesn’t violate the IRS Code! However, Spitzer may be prosecuted under Chapter 320.02 of the New York State Consolidated Laws for Patronizing a Prostitute in the fourth degree, which is a Class B misdemeanor. I doubt that will happen, unless he’s made so many enemies that the noose is ready to be placed around his neck! Only time will tell. What mystifies me regarding this entire matter is the outrage expressed from the general public, and of course the Media. The Media doesn’t really count, as they are only going to cover what sells to the general public. We’re not talking about Murder or Mayhem, we’re talking about Prostitution. It’s not the first time a public official patronized Prostitution, as President Warren G. Harding could give us a lesion on that one!

Prostitution is the oldest profession known to mankind! As a Probation Officer, I spent 35 years in the Trial Court and witnessed 35 years of prosecuting Prostitution. Guess what…it’s in demand today as when I first started in the mid 1960s! It didn’t take me long to figure out that we were in a loosing battle and that perhaps we should consider legalizing Prostitution. Back in the 1960s, the worst you might get was a case of the clap! Things really changed in the 1980s, as the greater proportion of Prostitutes were not HIV Positive. By 1988, 80% pf the “Street Prostitutes” were HIV Positive and the demand was as high as ever! Prostitution is an “offence,” which will neither be solved nor controlled. In reality, the criminality of this offence should go to those who promote and control Prostitution, as well as the proliferation of drugs associated with it. What are the benefits of Legalized Prostitution? The first benefit is the matter of health. Prostitutes will have to undergo regular medical exams, and treatment if necessary. We can control the spread of sexual transmitted diseases, especially AIDS. There will be a serious reduction of the use of drugs by Prostitutes, as well as treatment for those who need it. By legalizing Prostitution, the criminal element now operating it will be eliminated. Licensing Prostitutes and the state controlled of brothels will result in increased revenue for city, towns and states. Legalizing could offer private or public operation of brothels. That would depend on how you wanted to deal with it. That’s the issue….dealing with it, not avoiding it as if it was the plague. You can punish the “Johns,” by prosecuting them, placing their names in newspapers or on web pages or having their photos on the Post Office wall. They are not going to stop. They haven’t in my 35 years, as I interview everyone from construction workers to CEOs, from priests to police and anyone else who has testicles that are in working order…and even those that are not! It is the nature of Man. As Lenny Bruce said 50 years ago, “Guys will do it to mud!” Eliot Spitzer had a successful career ahead of him as Governor of New York and the possibility of being the first Jewish President of the United States.
